Diesel's Swedish girlfriend Ice gave birth to her litter in the early May. Six puppies were born, all very very small, and four of them dead. The two that survived weakened and slept away in the age of about 1.5 weeks. What a tragedy and sorrow for Ice and her owner Carola. This was supposed to be the first litter in her kennel. I felt my heart was broken for her and wished so much there was something I could do to help.

The puppies were sent in for autopsy and Ice gave a blood sample for examination. The findings in the puppies were in accordance with Ice's blood test result: the cause of death of the whole litter is canine herpes virus, just like it was suspected.
In early pregnancy canine herpes virus causes abortation of fetus, the bitch goes "empty". In later stage of pregnancy the canine herpes virus causes premature birth, small size of puppies, dead puppies and puppies that are weak and die within the first 3 weeks.
According to the blood test Ice now has superb antibodies against herpes so her future litters should be complitely normal and safe. But it is also possible to vaccinate the bitch against canine herpes virus: you vaccinate her 7-10 days after first mating, and re-vaccinate 7-10 days before calculated date of giving birth.

We hope for many healthy and happy puppies for Ice in the future!
